Early one morning in Puerto Ayora, I set out for El Garrapatero Beach with a clear plan in mind. The idea was to experience the island in a practical way, combining exercise with a day at the beach.
Getting There: Options and Practicalities
I chose to rent a bike for $10 per day and tackle a 21 km ride through a mix of paved roads and dirt paths. The journey took roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, including some challenging uphill stretches. Once I reached the parking area, a 15-minute walk brought me to the beach.
For those preferring less physical strain, a taxi is available from Puerto Ayora for $40–$50 round trip. Alternatively, some visitors opt for a taxi ride uphill (for about $10 with a bike) and then enjoy a downhill to El Garrapatero parking zone.
Wildlife and Activities:
At El Garrapatero, the wildlife is the highlight. I saw marine iguanas, pelicans, and mockingbirds along the shore, and even spotted flamingos near a small lagoon. Also, if you're lucky, you may see in the shallow waters, sea turtles and rays.
The beach also offers plenty of activities:
- Swimming & Snorkeling: The calm waters are ideal for a dip.
- Kayaking: Rentals cost about $10 per 30 minutes.
- Hiking & Birdwatching: Explore nearby trails and keep an eye out for local birdlife.
- Picnicking: Enjoy the designated grill zones under the shade, perfect for a BBQ or a light snack. Just remember, bring everything you need and take back all your trash to keep the area pristine.

El Garrapatero is open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To make the most of the day, pack the essentials:
